Differences between mate and partner:

MATE

Translations

Pareja, colega, camarada, amigo. Se usa en diferentes contextos como en militar, marines (sailor mate --> compañero de la marina), también usado en contexto de equipos en deporte (my football mate --> compañero en el equipo de fútbol) o en contextos muy informales entre amigos y en pareja (He is my mate at work).

Compound Forms:

Cabin mate: compañero de cabina. Ex He sleeps with his cabin mate --> El duerme con su compañero de cabina.

Soul mate: media naranja [informal] Ex: I look on dating websites to find my soulmate --> Miro en webs de citas para encontrar a mi media naranja.

Team mate: colega de equipo. Ex: I love my job I have good team mates --> Adoro mi trabajo, tengo un gran grupo de colegas/compañeros.

Work mate: colega de trabajo (usado cuando son dos trabajadores, no en grupo). Ex: My work mate is my best friendo--> Mi compañero de trabajo es mi mejor amigo.

Translations

Socio de negocios. Ex: The chef was a business partner of the restaurant owner --> El chef era socio comercial del dueño del restaurante.

Compañero (de habitación, piso, pareja etc). Ex: Sleep can be difficult if your partner snores --> Tratar de dormir puede ser muy difícil si tu compañero ronca.

Compañero de policia. Ex: While he searched the suspect, his partner searched the car. --> Mientras él cacheaba al sospechoso su compañero revisaba el automóvil.

Pareja de baile o juego. Ex: John dances well, and Mary likes to be his partner in the vals --> John baila muy bien y a Mary le gusta ser su pareja de vals.

Jane and Dave played tennis with John and his partner, Mary. --> Jane y Dave jugaban tenis con John y su compañera Mary.

Socio de un club, organización. Ex: Call all the partners in the tennis club to tell them about the meeting --> Llama a todos los socios del club de tenis para informarles de la reunión.

Compound forms:

Dancing partner: pareja de baile. Ex: Will you be my dancing partner? --> Serás mi pareja de baile?

Partner in crime: compañero de crímenes. Ex: this gentleman your partner in crime?--> ¿Este señor es su compañero de crímenes?

Bussiness partner: socio de negocios. Ex: I always agree with my business partner.
